This carving was carved from a scotch pine log with a chainsaw and other power tools. It stands roughly 34.5 inches tall and is roughly 10.5 inches wide. It has been sealed with multiple coats of spar urethane giving it a glossy protective finish. The carving does have cracks in it as you can see in the photo. One in the side of the face and one down the front of the carving along with several small cracks. Cracks are a normal occurrence in wood carvings and should not be viewed as a defect. They just add character to the piece. There are other natural imperfections in this piece as well. The carving can be kept inside or outside but I do not recommend keeping the carving in direct sunlight as the excessive heat and harsh UV light are very hard on wood carvings and can cause discoloring and intensify cracking. The best place to keep a wood carving is in a cool shaded location. Wood also responds to its environment by expanding and contracting. This means cracks can open up and close periodically with fluctuations in weather. In many ways, wood is a living breathing medium that is constantly changing and responding to its environment. More cracking and checking is possible over time. There is nothing that I can do to make this carving not crack. It is simply the nature of wood.
