19th Century Spanish Carved Wood Mannequin Madonna Virgin Mary Santo Sculpture
Outstanding early 19th century Southern Spanish Mater Dolorosa of the Seven Sorrows. Period: First quarter of the 19th Century. Total height: 84 cm (33 inches) – but keep in mind she’s seated, which means she’d be of even more important proportions if standing. See the penultimate picture, of her next to a wine bottle for proportions. Entirely hand carved in wood, a thin layer of applied gesso and polychrome painted with glass eyes, horsehair eyelashes and crystal tears. This is a very special piece from Andalusia in Southern Spain. She was a processional Madonna for a Cofradía in Cordoba. They recently replaced her with a larger piece, which is why this one is coming onto the market. Unfortunately her vestments and crown weren’t included in the sale as they’re being re purposed but you can see them in the 3rd picture. She was well taken care of and because she was processioned on an yearly basis, the painting was always carefully touched up to keep her looking at her best. Madonnas of this type rarely come onto the market! Condition: Excellent condition with aesthetic restorations (to the polychrome painting). Looking closely we see different layers of paint on the body and base which give the piece a very interesting appearance. Provenance: Cofradía in the Cordoba region. Historical Notes: This depiction of the Virgin is known as the Mater Dolorosa of the Seven Sorrows. The Seven Sorrows of Mary are a popular Roman Catholic devotion. In common religious Catholic imagery, the Blessed Virgin Mary is portrayed in a sorrowful and lacrimating affect, with seven daggers piercing her heart, often bleeding. Devotional prayers that consist of meditation began to elaborate on her Seven Sorrows based on the prophecy of Simeon. Common examples of piety under this title are Servite rosary, or the Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows of Our Lady and the Seven Joys of Mary and more recently, “Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary”. The feast of Our Lady of Sorrows is liturgically celebrated each 15 of September, while a feast of Friday of Sorrows is observed in some Catholic countries. Important depictions of this virgin include. The sculpture at Alcor in Seville: n. Wikipedia. Org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_Sorrows#/media/File:Do. The Seven Sorrows Virgin of Madrid: madrilanea.
