1991 Hand Carved Polychrome Painted Wooden Primitive Folk Art Schimmel Style Eaglet By Jonathan Bastian. For Your American Folk Art Collection-BastianEaglet91. Description: A hand carved wood and polychrome painted American Folk-Art figure by Jonathan Bastian. The carving shows a Wilhelm Schimmel Style Eaglet standing on a green colored base. The eaglet is off white in color with red, yellow and green splotch decoration. The bird’s wings and tail are colored in red, yellow and green with his legs being yellow in color. The bird’s head has a yellow beak and carved black eye on one side and green and black eye on the other side. It is standing on a pair of thick legs ending in three thick toes or fingers clutching the green base. The bird is made in the best tradition of Pennsylvania Folk Art tradition originally developed by Wilhelm Schimmel who was active in Cumberland Valley Pennsylvania in the mid 1800s. The piece is signed and dated on the underside of the base. The carving shows details of the wings, the tail, the head and beak. It is very well done and shows the marks of the tool used to carve it throughout. Just a wonderful and nicely done piece of American Folk Art to add to your Americana Collection. Size: Measures 4 3/8″ high and is 2 1/2″ by 1 1/2 at the base. The piece weighs slightly over one ounce. Marks: Marked in carved lettering on the underside of the base JB 91.
