To create this lifesize Great Horned Owl, I glued 4 pieces of wood together and then carved it as one piece. It is my favorite owl I have created yet. Clint Wickman Original Wall Art. This is an original relief wood carving that I designed and carved in my studio. I carved everything by hand with power tools from kiln dried Pine wood. On this carving, most of the coloring and shading on the Great Horned Owl and tree is burned on by hand. I then followed the burning by hand painting on my own custom mixed stains to highlight and accent the piece. The back of the carving is flat for wall mounting, and I attached a heavy duty metal flush mount hanger for a nail or screw head. I also hand signed and dated on the back. After burning all of the details, the wood is sealed with shellac. I then hand paint stains, and finish with a brushed on top coat of exterior grade U. Resistant Spar Urethane with a “satin” sheen. This wood carving is however intended for indoor use. If you want to place it outdoors, I recommend brushing on a few more coats of Spar Urethane/Varnish.
