This unique lagoon is non-tidal, meaning almost every generation of mangrove trees is the foundation of life for the next, as there is no tide to sweep away the remains. When the fury of a hurricane envelops the IRL’s 156 miles of shoreline, mangrove roots and limbs from a year to a century old, are now placed by nature in odd places such as millions of pounds of granite boulders protecting our roadways from erosion. There they sit for months or years being tossed about by waves created by winds or boat wakes. Joining these roots and limbs, are thousands of man-altered lumber from the tens of thousands of docks and decks who were also set free during hurricane force winds. The beauty created by these factors, is impossible to replicate. Finding and giving new life to these treasures has given our kayak and boating adventures, reason to come about more often. We invite you to come back and visit often to see what mother nature has left for us to share with you.
