Reina Ramirez is the recently separated wife of the famous Master Carver Mario Castellanos. Reina is the genius that developed the painting techniques that the couple became famous for. Since Reina hails from a traditional wood carving family, Reina inspired much of their work. Now that they are separated, it is fantastic to see Reina carrying on her famous family’s tradition, and seeking to make a name for herself finally in the world of Oaxacan wood carvings. We love supporting women owned enterprises, so we are so proud to share her work with you. We have invited Reina many times as a featured artist at our museum shows in California and Arizona. The museum patrons are always excited to see her in action, as painting is what she loves to do most, and it always shows! What a stunning owl wood carving! There is such beauty and texture in this piece, with the ridges individually carved into the wings. Such a beautiful tactile feel to this piece. A difficult to achieve sense of motion, as the owl appears ready to launch into flight with it’s extended and upright wings. The face is amazing. And the paint technique is colorful, detailed, and beautiful. Movement, tradition, museum quality and a touch of whimsy… Of our favorite qualities in Oaxacan carvings. This owl is carved out of the traditional locally sourced Copal Wood. Combine it with the beautiful and traditional paint design done by Reina Ramirez, and you have a truly amazing work of art! There are no removable parts, and the owl is signed by the artist. Approximate Measurements: 10 5/8″ high x 7 1/8″ long x 6 1/2 deep.
