Hand Carved Wooden Sea Turtle Rare Hickory Burl Wood Large Life Sized Sculpture

This unique piece was carved out of a burl in a Hickory tree located in West Tennessee. The burl itself, a rare and valuable find. The artist, 37 year old Jeremy McKnight, noticed the burl 5 years ago, and watched it grow. Jeremy hauled the tree stump containing the large, heavy burl from the forest floor by hoisting it up to the bumper of his Jeep Wrangler, using his winch for leverage. The tree was located in a section of forest designated to be cleared for soil testing by a local sand & gravel company. Prior to firing up his chainsaw, he already knew what lye beneath the surface. He envisioned a majestic sea turtle. When we arrived home with it, Jeremy immediately went to work, anxious to bring to life and share with the world, this great creature of the sea. It’s rough frame was chainsaw cut, the remaining detail hand carved with hammer and chisel. The outline of its scales were defined using a torch, then it was hand sanded to perfection, leaving it’s facial features for last. Many hours of labor were devoted to it’s exquisitely detailed creation, yet much also was provided by Mother Nature herself. The swirled grain of the burl lent much of it’s own uniquely natural detail, as if the burls entire purpose had always been meant to become this magnificent Sea Turtle Jeremy pondered for a bit, unsure of what it’s face should look like. He didn’t want it frowning or looking mean. All the sudden in his minds eye he saw a turtle character from a movie he had seen and enjoyed. Without further hesitation, he began transferring that image to the turtle in front of him. Once completed, he introduced his masterpiece. With a big smile he fondly said, Ya’ll, This is Crush, the most awesome creature of the sea, dude. Affectionately naming him after Walt Disney’s 150 year old turtle movie character in Finding Nemo. He finalized it by giving it the mark of authenticity, his signature. This is a very large, heavy sculpture. This amazing sculpture is destined to be prominently displayed. It is certainly showcase quality that is bound to be quite the conversation piece!
