CROW TRACKS Wood Carvings. I carved this woodcock on Feb 21, 2019. I have been carving in this town since 1983 and have a gallery called CROW TRACKS where I sell my work during the tourist season. Please take some time to visit my gallery when you are vacationing on the Maine coast. I carve and sell many different carvings. I always have woodcock carved and ready for sale in my shop. The Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge here in Eastern Maine is managed for the study of the woodcock. We commonly see them here in Eastern Maine doing their comical woodcock walk on the gravel roads. The height of the whole carving is about 5 1/4 inches and it is about 9 1/4 inches from the tip of the tail to the end of the tail. The bird is life-size. This piece I carved from white pine and painted with acrylics. Instead of glass eyes I carved and painted the eyes and always try to give each of my pieces character through facial expression. The primary wing feathers and tail feathers are textured with a wood-burning pen, which simulates the fine lines of feather barbs. The legs/feet are hand made from wire and thread using fishing fly tying methods. My carvings also feature a burnt-in signature. On this piece the signature and date are burnt into the base where it is out of sight. The base is wood and painted with acrylic paints to simulate pieces of rock.
