Fabulous antique Spanish hand carved solid wood figural panel or plaque, likely a detailed rendition or version of “The Death of Socrates”! One of two marvelous hand carved figural panels that we’re adding this week, this one quite amazing in its detail and state of preservation! The paper label on the back missing some patches but reads “Exposition Nacional de Bellas Artes (Barcelona)” and has the carver’s? Name hand written below, possibly “Maneul Tabella”. The National Exhibition of Fine Arts (Spanish: Exposiciones Nacionales de Bellas Artes) was a regular event that took place in Spain from 1856 to 1968; usually in Madrid. These exhibitions were in the form of a competition, established by a Royal Decree from Queen Isabella II in 1853. It was the largest official exhibition of Spanish art. This one signed in the lower right corner and appears to read M. Very good to excellent condition. I really see no flaws to note here, just a stunning piece! Possibly a tiny nip or two to the carving but, as stated, nothing stands out. I’ve included several enlarged and detailed photos so look and enjoy. The plaque is 8.5″ x 5 1/8″ and roughly 1/2 thick.
