Saint Cecilia, also known as Saint Cäcilia in German, is one of the most famous and venerated martyrs in Christian hagiography. According to tradition, she lived in Rome during the 2nd or 3rd century AD and is celebrated as the patron saint of music, particularly church music, as well as musicians, composers, and poets. The story of Saint Cecilia is rich with legend and symbolism. She is said to have been a noble Roman woman who pledged her virginity to God, but her parents arranged for her to marry a pagan nobleman named Valerian. During their wedding, it is said that Cecilia sang to God in her heart, praying for strength and chastity. She later informed Valerian of her vow, and he respected it, especially after having a vision of an angel. Subsequently, Valerian and his brother Tiburtius converted to Christianity. Saint Cecilia is often depicted playing a musical instrument, typically an organ or a viola, which is symbolic of her patronage of music. According to her legend, she converted over 400 people through her piety and the miracles attributed to her, before she and her husband were arrested and martyred for their faith. The accounts of her martyrdom state that she was struck three times on the neck with a sword, but lived for three days after the attack, during which time she made many more conversions and arranged for her home to be converted into a church. Saint Cecilia was venerated early in Christian history, and her cult was well established by the time of Pope Gelasius I, who included her among those whose feasts were to be observed universally.
