16th 17th Century Carved Wood Polychromed Italian Sculpture Michelangelos Pieta
For sale is a wonderful probably 16th or 17th century carved, polychromed, and partial gold gilt figure of Michelangelos La Pieta (The Pity) sculpture. This sculpture was carved by Michelangelo in 1498 to1499. Shortly there after many Italian artists painted, carved, and replicated this work of art. It made its way into numerous churches in the form of wood carvings. This piece is superb, it shows Jesus after The Crucifixion lying on the lap of his mother Mary. She gazes down at the body of her beloved son the Lord Jesus Christ with a look of sorrow and pity on her face. This is what gives the title to this iconic work of art by Michelangelo. The Pity (La Pieta). This carving retains some of its original polychromed surface as well as traces of original gold gilding which can be seen in one of the pictures surrounding Marys head. This piece came out of a private collection in the Hudson Valley of upstate New York. We do not know the origin of this piece other than it was in their family for as long as they could remember going back several generations. The carving is set upon a very old presentation board which is probably 18th or early 19th century in and of itself. It is most likely not original to the carving but it is included in the sale. Length – 12 1/8. Width – 7 1/2. Depth – 3 1/4. The Pieta (The Pity); (14981499) is a work of Renaissance sculpture by Michelangelo Buonarroti, housed in St. Peters Basilica, Vatican City. It is the first of a number of works of the same theme by the artist. The statue was commissioned for the French Cardinal Jean de Bilhères, who was a representative in Rome. The sculpture, in Carrara marble, was made for the cardinal’s funeral monument, but was moved to its current location, the first chapel on the right as one enters the basilica, in the 18th century. It is the only piece Michelangelo ever signed. This famous work of art depicts the body of Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after the Crucifixion. The theme is of Northern origin, popular by that time in France but not yet in Italy. [citation needed] Michelangelo’s interpretation of the Pietà is unprecedented in Italian sculpture. It is an important work as it balances the Renaissance ideals of classical beauty with naturalism.
