Vintage Wooden Santo Folk Art Carving Santiago Matamoros Horse with Rider

Stunning Folk Art Carved and polychrome painted wooden figure of Saint James the Apostle (Santiago Matamoroso) mounted on a horse. Santos figures are devotional folk art carvings made across Spain and Latin America from the colonial period onward. These pieces were continually made into the 19th and early 20th centuries and remain popular with collectors of religious folk art. This sculpture comes in 2 pieces. The rider and the horse are separate. The rider wears a green top with white accents and redtrousers. He has a black mustache and goatee, short bobbed hair and a flat topped hat. The horse’s large eyes are carved and outlined in black as are the bridle and reins. The horse’s right front leg is raised. The soldier has a hole in each fist for a weapon or flag. The arms are movable. The stand is a flat cut of wood. The horse’s legs are nailed from beneath to the base. It is in amazingly great condition for its age, expect some normal wear, it’s just missing the weapons or flags the rider is supposed to carry.
