Huge KOMOKWA MASK, Chief of the Sea with WHALE SCULPTURE and SEA URCHINS by artists Randy Stiglitz and Janice Morin. (signed by both, dated at the back). Canada – superb First Nations art from the Pacific Northwest! Both are married and members of the Coast Salish/Cree First Nations. They have many years of experience in this art and are just very skilful and talented artists who are well known around the world. This piece is so detailed and the expression is just mesmerizing! The eyes and the forehead are inlaid with abalone, the face is adorned with cedar rope, the mask itself is adorned with lots of cedar bark. The MASK AND the WHALE are inlaid with many pieces of Abalone (mother of pearl) – I’ll let the images speak for themselves… Measurements in total: 33″ tall, 20″ wide, 14 deep, that’s including the cedar bark. The whale on top is 13″ x 10″ x 7″, the face itself is 14″ x 11″ x 9″. Was born 1953 on. To a German mother and a Coast Salish father. Randy’s family moved to the Capilano Indian Reserve when he was 8 years old. Randy began carving at the age of 15. She apprentice with master carver Oppie Oppenheim for a few years. Later, her work was influenced by her husband Randy Stiglitz, himself a very well known artist and master carver.
