The rosewood box, which has 18 slots for tools in the main box, and the wood tray which lifts out and which has another 18 slots for tools. The first picture shows the tray sitting in front of the box, and I didn’t show the tray sitting inside the box. The outside of the box has a brass medallion in the center of the lid. Most of the inscription in that medallion has been obscured except for “MISS” as shown. The box measures about 14-1/8″ by 9-1/8″ by 2-5/8 on the outside, and the inside is lined with blue cloth as can be seen. The 35 carving tools as shown. All are marked HENRY TAYLOR, and most except for some of the tools with the thinnest shafts have the acorn logo. All have rosewood handles. The main box will fit a tool with a maximum length of about 7-7/8″, and the upper tray will fit a tool with a maximum length of about 7-1/2″, to give you a sense of the length of the tools. One more tool, on the far left in the lower set in the main box, that is marked HENRY TAYLOR, but has an end more like a screwdriver and less like a carving tool. It has a much darker handle, and is about 5-3/4 in length. The box and tools weigh just under 5-1/2 pounds. I would assume that a set like this would have been a special order for a special customer, and we can only speculate as to who “MISS” might have been! Since 1834, Henry Taylor has been and still is one of the premier makers of carving tools in Sheffield, England. Condition of the box varies, and it is quite an attention getter. The top panel is cracked, there is a chip out of the tray, a chip out of the bottom near the lock, and the cloth on the bottom has some paper stuck to it and is starting to come off. The interior cloth seems to be intact with no tears but with some frayed edges. There is some stitching in the center of the cloth panel on the lid where something like an owner name plate might have been removed. Conditon of the tools is very good, and they appear to have seen very little use. There are some small bits of light rust, but most of the darker spots that you see are cosmoline or grease instead of rust or patina (color). There are no owner markings on any of the tools. I don’t have the key for the lock. The presentation box is a hair too long to fit inside a Flat Rate box. I sell what I enjoy, and I collect antique woodworking tools and I enjoy photography!
