While I’m quite certain this was originally made to be used as a cigar server for table, with that beautifully carved basket the perfect size to hold a handful of largish after-dinner cigars, it would be equally fabulous to use as table centerpiece with a floral or dried flowers bouquet mounted into that basket. The carving is exquisitely done. I don’t see a signature, but this is of the quality you’d anticipate from a famed carver who would take price in signing his work. The piece is also quite large. Not the smallish rooster & bucket type we see regularly, carved and popular much later in the century, but a mid-1800s work of Animalier artistry one seldom finds. The base is 11 x 7.5. Very good condition for age and type, and were it not for the broken wing, this one would be excellent. Alas, it’s got the loss and is certainly a carving worthy of having restoration done if you’re a serious collector, or it’s wonderful as you see it, too, for use as a table centerpiece, just arrange your flowers and vines to take attention away from the carving’s one flaw. Big and impressive, heavy solid old forest natural growth wood in this one, too. Entirely carved from one big chunk of wood, the detail on the primary rooster is truly incredible. And the basket is detailed like no other. Our photos do not show this one nearly as well as it shows in person. A very dark stain, it’s hard to show the detail as your eye will take it in.
