This knife is “Nostalgia #88″ and has a moderately curved edge and straight spine tapering towards a rather fine tip, for a classic shape. It is towards the longer range of this series at 2 7/8. Large enough for hard work, but also great for details. The handle is a special piece of Curly Maple with dramatic Tiger stripes. The curved shape complements the blade for a harmonious overall effect. It is a new Davis Brothers handmade knife. Part of a limited new series started after a little nostalgia hit me over the New Year holiday. When making our first knives, about 40 years ago, my brother and I used whatever good steel we could get our hands on. Some of our finest resulted from old saw blades, which are high carbon, and hold an edge exceptionally well (think of a saw being used for hours or days between sharpenings). The handles were made from salvaged wood from many sources, but always unusual or unique in character. This is a new limited edition of knives. No two will ever be exactly alike and they are numbered. They will all be made from superior materials. It is unlikely that many will be made, so grab one when you can! This knife was hand made by a carver, for carvers, right here on the Pacific Northwest Coast. Well known for high quality hand forged NW Coast style woodcarving tools, is making a limited number of some favorites. This blade is extremely sharp. Please use caution when removing from the packaging. Always be aware of where you are cutting, and do not put hands, fingers or other parts of your body in the path of the blade. Always wear a cut-resistant carving glove on the hand not holding the knife. And please keep this knife safely away from children. The auctions are staggered, with one every 10 minutes, to allow customers to view each one in sequence. WORKMANSHIP: Each knife is unique and hand crafted, with no automated processes used in the more than 30 machining, forging and woodworking tasks for each one. Some very fine tool marks may be visible on the knives. I do not attain absolute machine-like perfection, but strive to combine art, beauty and utility. The look and feel of this tool when held is beautiful, smooth, and inspires the work at hand. BLADE: It was made using high quality saw steel from a crosscut logging saw over 100 years old. This saw was used in logging in the Pacific Northwest around the turn of the 20th century. The blade was cut out, ground to shape then forged, refined and hardened. It was then tempered to keep a durable, keen edge and is extremely sharp. The blade is 2 7/8″ long, and tapers from 9/16″ to the tip. The cutting edge is curved over it’s. Straight along the spine, tapering towards the tip. Although this is a robust blade the spine has a taper towards the front that enables finer work, and it will come in handy for larger details. This steel had an aged patina which was left intact along the spine, as visible in the photos. For many years we have have saved aside wood with special character and can offer unusual, beautiful and unique handles. This handle is Tiger Maple, with extraordinary Tiger-like stripes, from a piece of with iridescent grain patterns and creamy blonde color. A traditional handle wood in the Northwest, Maple is incredibly tough and hard combined with beauty. This shape is robust, yet comfortable, allowing plenty of force to be used while still maintaining control. It is finished with hand rubbed natural Shellac and Carnauba Wax. CONSTRUCTION: This knife is 8 3/4. ” overall, with a 2 7/8″ long blade that is 9/16 wide before tapering to a finely curved point. The cutting edge is gently curved, and the spine is straight. The blade is set with epoxy and further secured with a traditional seine twine wrap, saturated with Cyanoacrylate for strength. CARVING CHARACTERISTICS: I have used blades. Similar to this since I started carving; almost 40 years ago now. This one is made for creation and roughing out of carvings, cleanup and detail work, as well as general carving and hobby use. It is very handy for lots of general cutting tasks. This blade is ideal for carving and whittling in the round and as the end is sharply pointed, It will also do cleanup, detail work and stop cuts. The curvature of the edge allows smooth curves to be cut while incising and slicing. With a double bevel edge , this knife can be used with either hand, and cuts well either pushing or pulling. The blade has plenty of strength for these tasks, but should not be used for prying. For best performance, when sharpening this tool both sides should be sharpened. The item “Davis Bros.
