This owl carving was carved using a chainsaw and power tools. It is carved from laminated kiln dried lumber, meaning multiple boards glued into a block and then carved. There are visible seams in the carving where the boards are joined. The advantage to this technique of carving is that it eliminates much of the cracking and checking you would see in a traditional raw timber carving. However, it is still possible for a small amount of cracking to occur over time. The carving has been sealed in multiple coats of spar urethane, giving it a glossy protective finish. It can be kept indoors or outdoors. If kept outdoors, I recommend keeping it in a cool shaded location like under a covered porch. Avoid placing the carving in direct sunlight as the excessive heat and harsh uv lights are very hard on wood carvings. Also, if kept outside, the carving will need annual maintenance, meaning a fresh coat of spar urethane every year. Do not use polyurethane. The dimensions are roughly: 20″ tall, 8″ thick, and 7 wide.
