Religious Figural Carving Barefoot Robed Fine Art Wood Sculpture. I love figural wood sculptures, but this piece is very special with classical styling that feels more fine art than folk art. There is an intensity of strength and gravitas in his composition and expression balanced with incredible beauty and grace in his posture and the intricate draping of his robes. His left foot is raised and resting on a block with bended knee that creates a slight forward leaning that enhances the humble intensity of his expression. He is holding a large book in both hands. The hole in the base suggests he was possibly affixed to a post, or maybe part of a larger display, possibly a relic from a cathedral or church. I don’t know when this piece was made, but the subject matter, style, patina and build-up suggests it is old. The piece is in beautiful condition with no gouges, splitting or other condition issues.
