Carved Wood Santos Figure Virgin Mary and Child French Sculpture 18th century
A French carved polychrome and gilded wood Santos Sculpture. Depicting Virgin Mary and Christ Child. The Madonna depicted wearing a large crown and dressed in blue flowing robes finished with gold trimmings. Dating from early 18th century. An object of devotion most probably from a private chateau chapel. Originally designed to hang on a wall, the metal hanging hook is still in place. Wood base is a later addition. Appropriate antique condition with wear commensurate with great age and use. Approx two hundred and fifty old and over the centuries has faired quite well. No major breaks or repairs. Loss of gesso and gilding in places with some over painting. I personally love to see old repairs and restorations, it only in my opinion adds to. The charms of the piece, proves that the sculputre has a history and has been loved. Please study photographs as they do form part of the description. So decorative and would fit perfectly in an antique or contemporary interior. SIZE 14 inches high x 5.5 across base inches S# 2232.
