Polychrome finish, painted and 24 carat gold plated by hand. Reflecting personally on the saint. Saint Rose of Lima is a notable figure in the Roman Catholic Church and the first person born in the Americas to be canonized as a saint. Her real name was Isabel Flores de Oliva, and she was born on April 20, 1586, in Lima, which was part of the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru at the time. Known for her piety, chastity, and dedication to the poor and sick, Rose of Lima chose to live a life of severe asceticism and devotion in her parents’ home rather than in a convent. Rose was known for her great beauty and took extraordinary measures to protect her chastity, including cutting off her hair and disfiguring her skin with pepper and lye. She frequently fasted and imposed upon herself an extreme regimen that included continuous prayer and various forms of self-mortification, such as wearing a heavy silver crown with spikes that pierced her flesh. These practices have been viewed in a complex light, reflecting her deep religious fervor but also highlighting the intense spiritual and physical demands she placed on herself. She became known for her visions and mystical experiences, and she dedicated much of her life to caring for the poor, the sick, and the elderly, whom she often brought into her small room at her family home to care for. Rose died on August 24, 1617, at the young age of 31. Her funeral was an occasion of great public veneration. Pope Clement IX beatified her in 1667, and she was canonized by Pope Clement X on April 12, 1671. Saint Rose of Lima is the patron saint of Peru and all of South America as well as of embroiderers, gardeners, and people ridiculed for their piety. Her feast day is celebrated on August 23. Her life continues to be a source of inspiration for many across the world, particularly in Latin America. Full round sculptural hand carved out of the finest wood.
