Vintage Cormorant Lidded Dish Inspired By Traditional Northwest Coast Carvings
VINTAGE CORMORANT LIDDED DISH INSPIRED BY TRADITIONAL NORTHWEST COAST CARVINGS. This vintage lidded container is inspired by traditional Northwest Coast feast dishes used in Potlatches to serve food and fish oil. A carver has taken pains to design and decorate this dish or box with a lid, featuring three birds; two cormorants and an eagle with a fish. It is not, however, a typical Northwest Coast design. This piece dates from the mid 20th century. This wooden lidded dish is painted with black, grey, green and red accents then varnished. It measures approximately 19″ long, 6″ wide and 8 tall. This piece apparently had some sort of paper label on the bottom which is now missing. Some flaking to the varnish in spots, split in the wood on one side of the cormorant’s neck. It does not affect the structural integrity of the piece. The head is firmly attached to the rest of the cormorant, but the split is there nonetheless. And one more small split at the interior edge of the bowl, please see photos. Overall, this is a vintage piece carved in the Northwest Coast First Nation style that is very unique.
