This is a great example of a Maori tekoteko sculpture made in Rotorua for people on the Grand Tour over a century ago. It has Moko Tattoo carvings on the lips the sex of the figure is clearly defined and the adze marks and patina show it is a lovely early example. Maori Hand carved wood Sculpture, Wahaika (War Club), Authentic New Zealand Craft. Amazing hand carved traditional wooden Wahaika with Paua Shell inlay, war club carved by a Maori master craftman in the way of a millenary tradition. Size: 390mm Long (15.6 Inches). The Maori people being fierce warriors used a wide range of hand weapons. The Wahaika is one of the many forms of fighting club used by Maori warriors and was reserved for only the highest ranking and most respected fighters. It is often given as a ceremonial piece on special occasions. The carved figure on the edge represents either a sacred ancestor or the god of war. The Wahaika was held so that the figure faced the warrior so it could see over his shoulder to protect his back. Maori warriors were fierce fighters and in the close confines of New Zealands dense bush, small hand weapons were the most practical to use. They were most often carved in stone or jade and were used like a knife with a stabbing movement so needed the strong wrist tether to keep them in the hand while fighting.
