The artisan used the natural contours of the wood to form the head, horns, and muscular body, letting the burl’s organic textures create the illusion of fur and motion. A one-of-a-kind folk art piece, likely from the Pacific Northwest or Northern California, this sculpture perfectly captures the rustic artistry of letting nature shape the final form. This appears to be a vintage Aztec or Mayan Jaguar Warrior (Cuauhocelotl) hand-carved wooden statue. These statues represent the elite military order of the Aztec Empire, known for their strength and predatory skill. Motif: The sculpture depicts a human warrior emerging from or encased within the jaws of a jaguar. In Mesoamerican culture, the jaguar was a sacred symbol of power, night, and the underworld. The warrior’s face is visible in the mouth of the feline, a classic “dualistic” artistic style. Material: It is hand-carved from a dark, dense wood (likely Ironwood or Mahogany) with a deep brown/black stain. Inlay Work: The statue features significant bone or resin inlay (the white/cream sections). These inlays define the jaguar’s teeth, the warrior’s earspools, and the decorative patterns on the base and headdress. Dimensions: Based on the tape measure, the statue stands approximately 11 to 11.5 inches tall. Vintage circa 1980s (1983) hand carved wooden forest spirit by P Wells. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER Seen one this nice in my entire life. Love how the mustache continues along the grains of the wood. Appears to be from Trees of Mystery in Klamath, California. 12″ x 9″ measure as shown in the pictures. This is an EXTREMELY solid and beautiful piece. The sculpture is autographed by the artist and was made in the United States. The subject of the sculpture is a forest spirit with a folk art style.
