We are delighted to offer this tabletop sculpture showcasing a pair of Avocet birds on a burl wood base, circa 1970; by California folk artist Jack Francis. It features remarkable hand carving and painting, and beautifully exhibits the essence of the long legs and tremendous beaks that distinguish the Avocet. This rare piece would fit nicely in a stylish beach house, or on display as a reminder of summer days in any house. It is in very good overall condition, save for a repair to the beak of the larger bird and a nick to the smaller one. The sculpture measures approximately 13.5″ high x 13.5″ diameter x 9.25 depth. It is signed on the base. Jack Francis, bird carver from Mt. Shasta, California; was active in the 1960’s and 1970’s. This pair of long billed curlews features extraordinary craftsmanship from the delicate feather textures to realistic and detailed painting. They are similar but not the same and can be displayed in a myriad of positions or can just as easily stand alone. Neither are signed but demonstrate a high level of craftsmanship, they are incredibly realistic. I have taken many detailed photos of them and encourage you to zoom in to see the full extent of the workmanship. One beak appears to be an attached piece of wood and the join is visible.
