Listed is a 28 inch Nautical Ocean Killer Whale Bait Shop Folk Art Sign/Display. The Carving is 9 inches wide and 1 3/4 thick… The wood that was used is Northern White Cedar.. The Whale Carving is in excellent condition with normal signs of age and wear.. Note: This Carving was been used in an outdoor environment much of the paint has been lost… The Whale surface is in a Blue tone on cedar (appears to be worn light blue paint) which has had coats of oil. It has been used in an indoor and outdoor environment.. The Carving was completed in 1987 than along with others given to local bait shops across the US used for display only…. Since the Whale was used in an outdoor environment it has always had oil preservative on the wood… The Carving has a great amount of detail with very sharp wood-sharp teeth, black rubber blow hole at the top with Glass Eyes inside an old plated washers… The Whale Carving is supported by two round Antique Rusted Round Hangers that are originally from England…. The carving was done and signed by CJ Branby a fish carver from northern Minnesota…. The cost of this carving is driven by the high price of the cedar wood which comes from the great forests of Maine and the great carving details. This extraordinary 1960s-70s trade sign was used in front of a northern Indiana Farm Bureau Co-Op for almost twenty years and has a great, heavy paint history. Carved from a single 150 year old log salvaged from a local barn, it measures 64 tall x 14 wide x app. 12 deep and measures app. 12 across the base. As the photos show, it is exceptionally realistic with deeply cut details and a smooth enamel-like surface from heavily applied house paint. The last coat of paint dates from the 1980s. You will note old insect holes (the log had some powder post BEFORE it was carved) and expected age/weather cracks. It is sturdy with stable paint and terrific presence.
