My father and I visited/vacationed in Sonora Mex in the 60s-80s, sailing, fishing, and diving. We frequent the Kino Bay area, where a large population of the indigenous people known as the Seri. When this piece was made, there wasn’t much in the way of electric or modern tools. Therefore many of these pieces that I inherited from my Pa are all hand made. This particular piece is fabricated without any modern tooling. It is a thing of beauty, and is looking for a home that can appreciate it’s craftsmanship. Most of the ironwood carvings today are fabricated in small shops in the capital of Sonora, Hermosillo. These modern day pieces are much smaller due to the drying up ironwood. Large pieces of ironwood has all but dried up. This particular piece was made in the late 60s, making it at least 50 years old. It measures L18”x H10″x W8″, and weighs 19lbs.
