It served as an invitation, drawing people into the establishment. While carp-shaped Jizai-kagi horizontal beams are more commonly found, signboards of this type are quite rare. This item is particularly suitable for avid lovers of salmon, those interested in Japanese history, or collectors of fine wood carvings. Ken Hansen Walnut Burl Wood Salmon Carving Wall Art. Ken Hansen Original Maple Burl Wood Salmon Carving Wall Sculpture. Signed on the back. Measures 23.5″ long by 8.5″ at the tallest point. Ken creates unique salmon and trout wood sculptures. He uses many varieties of wood for his creation, but his favorites are maple burl, buckeye burl, redwood burl and cottonwood burl. A “burl” is part of the root system of a tree and they are dug from the ground and resemble a 500-1,000 pound potato. Ken and his wife travel to northern California at least twice a year to hand pick the burls from their various wood suppliers. He then has them custom cut into his desired thickness. Each burl is unique in coloring and grain as is each fish. Ken currently has his work in galleries in Washington, Idaho, Montana and California. Measures: 20″ long x 7″ tall.

MASSIVE CARVED WOOD FISH FLY FISHING LODGE CABIN TROUT SALMON SCULPTURE FOLK ART. YouTube video of the fish to show the scale. THICK and MASSIVE and HEAVY!! THIS IS A WORLD RECORD CATCH!! This is an enormous one of a kind custom crafted solid wood carved fish. Most likely this was carved in the late 1960’s or early 1970’s and is made of thick heavy plank wood possibly reclaimed from an old schooner. The piece was acquired from a wealthy estate overlooking the Mystic River in CT. The fish resembles a salmon or a rainbow trout. AMAZING one of a kind showpiece, it could be the focal point of your home, restaurant, or business. It is extremely heavy and has heavy duty ropes strung through to hang from a ceiling. I would estimate this piece weighs around 250 pounds. The fish will need a few touch ups here and there. It would make an excellent addition to any collection.
