Hand Carved Maple Leaf Bowl. This exceptionally rare Folkart piece is by Andre Dube, a celebrated artist from Quebec. His works are hard to come by, and he is best know for his carvings of Canadian wildlife. This item is an oversized Maple Leaf decorative bowl. Beautifully carved, it has its original finish, and is marked on the bottom with Dube’s signature. It is truly a one of a kind piece. Size: 17.75 inches long, 15.5 inches, 2.75 inch tall/deep. Signed in ink pen: Trip to Quebec. Nicely aged with some expected patina. Laurent Fortin was a flat-plane carver in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec, active in 1960s. He made carvings of traditional Quebec figures and scenes. His work was very finely done and his carvings are very expressive. Finely carved by hand Québécois wood sculpture. Incised by hand signature on base front reads A. Original gallery sticker on piece is from the legendary Raymond Bourgault boutique in St. Jean Port Joli in Quebec. The piece dates from prior to 1960 – Early pieces have hand carved signature while later mass produced piece are stamped. 10 1/4 inches high. Base is 3 3/4 inches wide base and 2 3/4 inches deep base. This wonderful carving represents a longtime Quebec tradition of woodcarving. These amazing carvers carve from one piece of wood. The Raymond Bourgault boutique in St. Jean Port Joli in Quebec, is “ground zero” for showcasing many of the old-timers who made these labor-of-love. The sculpted piece I’m offering by Monsieur Peltie appears to be possibly made of pine from Quebec or Atlantic Canada. It is possibly finished. The sculptor focused his artistry on the beautifully sculpted face. The nose and mouth are finely carved and lifelike. The eyes are very distinct. Thank you for shopping.
