This wood carving of a Puerto Rican family — Familia Jibara — is in excellent condition. Wood is smooth, no warping, holes or flaking. Paint is evenly applied and facial expressions are well detailed. The mother’s eyes, focused on her husband, is holding her little girl’s hand. The position of father’s hands shows him holding sugar cane or another agricultural crop, which is not included in the set. Artesano Neftale Negron Marrero signed his name on the bottom of the mother’s left foot (See photo). Negron’s work was commissioned by a noted Puerto Rican Art and Santero collector.

This vintage “Santo de Palo” of San Sebastian is in good condition. The wood is solid and well painted, with a detailed face, drops of blood, ribbed chest and smooth skin. The right arm has a small crack at the shoulder (See photo). There’s a slight crack on the left wrist (See photo) which is hardly visible. The two arrows that pierce the chest were broken off and must be re-glued. It’s believed to have been carved sometime in the 1970’s or’80’s.

This wood carving of an “Afroantillana” (Black Latina) is in very good condition, no damage to the wood. The woman’s post earrings, tight-knit hair, and beautifully detailed facial features were carved by a Puerto Rican artisan sometime in the 1980’s or early 1990’s. The artist did not sign it. Bust is 4 3/4 in high (without the base) and 3 1/8 in wide (without the base). Entire carving, including base, is 6 1/4 in high.

The man’s well chiseled face bears a slight smile. The carving has no cracks, chips or damage and the paint is bright and even. He signed it and the wrote the date on the bottom of the base (See photo).

Master wood carver Nefale Negron created this “estampa puertorriquena” of a farmer grinding coffee (jibaro pilando cafe) sometime in the 1970’s-1980’s. Despite its age, the piece is in excellent condition. The “jibaro” moves slightly. He can be glued down if desired, but there is no need because he’s sturdy. Negron’s signature is on the bottom of the base (See photo). Measurements: Farmer is 3 in H. Wood base is 1/4 in H. Neftale Negron was born in Brooklyn, New York in the early 1960’s. Of Puerto Rican parents. Neftale learned to carve saints and other wooden figures from his father and is a master carver in his own right.

Neftale was also a Santero (carver of wooden saints) like his father. His works are in collections at the Ponce Art Museum and the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture (ICP).

It’s a rare find and in very good condition. There is one tiny insect hole on the right side of the base (See photo) It is one of Orta’s earliest works as seen by the fact that it’s unpainted and his wife Santia was the one who began painting his carvings.

This 1984 wood carving (Santos de Palo) of the Three Wise Men was made by Pedro Martinez. It’s in excellent condition, no chipping, cracks, peeling or warping. The base may be made of Cedar wood (See photos), is very solid and quite heavy for its size. The Three Kings may also be carved out of cedar. Measurements: Each figure measures 10 7/8 inches High without the base and is 3 3/8 in Wide. With the base, each figure is 12 1/2 inches High. The wooden base measures 12 1/4 inches Wide, 5 inches Deep and 1 1/2 inches High. Artesano Pedro Martinez signed his name and wrote the date on the the base (See photos). Little is known of Martinez except that he is Puerto Rican.

This wood carving of a conga player (congero) was made sometime in the 1980’s by Neftale Negron. It’s in excellent condition, no cracks or chips. The detailed carving has a light varnish, evenly applied. Negron stamped his name and address on the bottom of the base (See photo). Neftale lived there all his life. His father, Jose L.
