I acquired all these pieces at the same time and they are all by the same artist. These works span several decades over the artist’s career, with the earliest pieces dating from the 1980s. I do not know the exact age or the maker. It is made of a very light weight wood. He has glass eyes. He is holding a fish in his mouth. Lots of details in the carving and very unique. I’ve tried to research to see if any others like it and didn’t find anything. It has many areas of wear, chips, and scuffs which makes him appear aged. There are some markings on the bottom but I could not make it out. Possibly “BTO 55″ He is about 18″ long and 7″ wide. I took photos outside for better light and a few inside. This is an amazing one of a kind sculpture and one cool cat!

Vintage OUTSIDER FOLK ART Wood Root Sculpture PORCUPINE Hand Carved. Probably circa 1940s, possibly earlier. Northeastern folk art, very charming primitive piece. One of a kind. Excellent vintage condition, no scratches, broken root ends, or repair- pristine. 12″ long x 6.25″ high x 5.25 wide. Solid and very heavy hardwood which has been polished and smoothed. Completely hand made outsider/folk art piece carved and fashioned from a large gnarled wood root with the root ends representing the’quills’. The top clearly shows 6 round flat areas where branches were sawed off to create the porcupine back. Fantastic texture of bark and wood lumps and bumps. Amazing expression and hand carved face, ears, legs. Legs are attached by wooden dowels, feet have been individually carved and are securely nailed on. Eyes are flat black painted metal nails. Fantastic one of a kind piece- gallery quality collectible. Signed with the carved name EZRA BEAN on the underside. See all pics and use zoom. Barn owner said that the previous owner’s family must have made it a long time ago and put it in the loft and forgot about it over time. A completely unique sculpture- would look great on a mantle piece etc, a very special gift for an Art collector. Not sure what type of wood this is…. Weird, warty, and wonderful Folk Art!
