Stunning and ultra rare River Otter carving by Tom Taber. Ive seen alot of his waterfowl carvings but never an otter in person until this one. From an estate collection in Hayward Wisconsin. Absolutely gorgeous with minor wear. All metal whiskers are present. A bit of paint loss on a couple. Small indentations on its back shown in image #9. This is a signed piece that also has an etched metal plate. The piece has been entitled “River Gamblor” and has Tom Tabers name on the etched plate. Fantastic flow to the entire piece along with a wonderfully expressive face that features glass eyes. It you’re a Tom Taber collector, these pieces rarely come up for sale. It does need a light cleaning. I’ve left this in the exact condition found. Clean, polish or leave as is. That will be up to the buyers personal preference. I love this awesome blue Otter with Fish wood carving by Lauro Ramirez and his wife Griselda Morales! We finally met this wonderfully talented couple on one of our last trips to Oaxaca, and it was love at first sight! We are so excited to now carry their spectacular wood carvings! Lauro and Griselda are from Arrazola, a beautiful town just outside of Oaxaca City, and the village that many would call the birthplace of the Oaxacan Wood Carvings. Arrazola is located close to the famous ruins of Monte Alban and the newly opened ruins at Atzompa. The area is rich in history and tradition, and Lauro and Griselda seek to maintain the traditions in their fine, high quality work. Their son is also quite skilled at carving, and has won several student awards for his work. It is refreshing to see a young family so involved in the traditions of folk art! I jumped for joy when I saw this Otter! Masterfully carved and beautifully painted, it is just a truly eye catching piece full of movement, cheerful color and whimsy. The carving itself is full of a masterful intricacy that can only be achieved by a true master wood carver. This piece was signed by the artists, and the fish is the only removable part. Bon etat , support sans doute plus grand a l’origine mais coupé sur 4 cotés , l’animal est entier et n’a subi aucune coupure , seule la queue est fissuré en 2 mais rien ne bouge (sans doute un mauvais choc). Présence d’une légère dorure non d’origine et cachant la finesse de la sculpture (se gratte facilement et partira sans problème avec de la patience , je l’ai fait sur la tête pour que l’on voit bien les détails).
