Before carving began, the wood was allowed to dry for several months to prevent cracks or splits from forming. Cracks hurt Wood Spirits. Once completed, a coat of boiled lindseed oil was applied. Excess oil was was allowed to penetrate for a bit and then wiped away with a dry cloth. Another coat of lindseed oil was then lightly applied.
