This pair of beautifully carved wooden (probably teak) temple pieces depict the Burmese mythological chimera Pyinsa Rupa lit. It is a creature made from the amalgamation of parts of five different animals. It can be made up of an elephant, bullock (ox), horse, carp and tonaya (a mythical horned animal/dragon) or alternately lion, elephant, buffalo, carp, and hamsa(Sanskrit- hamsa or hamsa = an aquatic bird of passage, such as a goose or swan). The Pyinsa Rupa serves as the logo for Myanmar Airways International. 21 inches high and 7 inches wide at widest part (measured without stands). Antique 19th century hand carved wood sculptural wall shelf. Centered by a hand carved whimsical mascaron figure. Perhaps the head of a Green Man or Satyr surrounded by foliage, with characteristic features including pointed ears and swooping mustache. Finely detailed and skillfully hand carved. His face is set in a jovial expression, with mouth open in a friendly grin showing a row of small teeth. The main portion of the piece is entirely carved from solid wood. Exhibits gorgeous detail and dimension. The flat mount on top having a serpentine beveled edge. A beautiful piece and ready to hang.
