Haunted Wood Carving Figurine of Monk Unsettling Vintage with Eerie Inscription
Extremely Unsettling Vintage Wooden Carving by G. An unusual and unsettling carving using 3 mediums; a figure that is repulsive in a way, causing disquiet in everyone who looks at it. My wife hates the figure, claiming it is haunted, and she insists that I get rid of it. But I can’t just throw it away. It has a sort of flesh-crawling beauty all its own. I discovered the figure boarded up in the wall of a house that I was restoring. The figure was covered in years of dust and filth; I brought it home and cleaned it up. It was so covered in filth that at first it was unrecognizable, and why it was boarded up in a wall is anyone’s guess. I worked on it a while, and as you can see, the figure cleaned up beautifully and in fact, the wood still shines brilliantly. Figure is in good condition, beautifully if strangely detailed. 2 of the fingers of the right hand are missing; whether intentionally or unintentionally I can’t be sure. The figure seems to be pleading pitifully with a grotesque expression of despair on his face. He seems to be uttering something as he looks helplessly on. It stands at 11 tall. There is a very weird message carved crudely into the bottom of the pedestal, which may be his utterance. The inscription reads: Oh God, we don’t see, we don’t hear, and we cry for peace. ” It is inscribed: “Carved by G. Your order includes a FREE collectible trading card too just for fun. The bald head, meditative posture, and monastic clothing identify this Hand Carved figure as Bodhidharma. The Indian monk credited with founding the Chan (or Zen) tradition of East Asian Buddhism. The measurements of the statue are 10″ in height, 5″ wide, and 3 deep. The material is a light wood; therefore the sculpture only weighs 1 pound, 3 ounces. The condition of the Vintage Statue is consistent with its age with definite signs of overall wear. Please review the hi-res photos which accurately captures the beauty and state of the art work listed. The unsigned artisan originally painted the wood of the statue because there are still some faint remnants of. White paint on the hands and face, and the color red on the belt and chest garment. We believe the square hole in the back indicates the carving was once attached to a wall or display. This is a large, antique or vintage, Wooden Chinese Monk or Buddha with a Cobra Sculpture. It stands approximately 16 1/2″ tall X 11″ wide X 9 length. It is heavy as it weighs in the vicinity of 15 lbs. There is a poised Cobra with an out-stretched neck wrapped around the base. It features a wonderful, life-like face of a man with legs and arms folded. He appears to be wearing a robe that is tied in the front. There are a few small splits in a few areas of the wood and a few darkened areas but the overall look is Fantastic!
