This is a one-of-a-kind hand-carved and hand-painted wooden santo figure, or bulto – mid-20th century folk art from Mexico or the American Southwest, dating from the 1940s to 1960s. The figure is carved from a single block of wood, with a solemn stylized face, black painted hair, and vibrant green and red robes adorned with gold crosses and leafy motifs. A large carved cross extends down the body, symbolizing its devotional nature. A bulto, by definition, is a devotional carving of a saint, priest, or holy figure made by santeros, often painted in bold colors and intended for home altars or churches. Unlike smaller retablos or mass-produced figurines, bultos are three-dimensional sculptures created with care and symbolism, each one carrying the individuality of its maker. What makes this particular bulto special is its scale, presence, and individuality. At over 22 inches tall, it is larger than most examples encountered outside of institutional collections, and its brightly painted vestments with crosses and floral-inspired motifs give it a celebratory, sacred energy. This appears to be a vintage Aztec or Mayan Jaguar Warrior (Cuauhocelotl) hand-carved wooden statue. These statues represent the elite military order of the Aztec Empire, known for their strength and predatory skill. Motif: The sculpture depicts a human warrior emerging from or encased within the jaws of a jaguar. In Mesoamerican culture, the jaguar was a sacred symbol of power, night, and the underworld. Carved and painted wood sculpture with inset decorative thermostat or clock that is missing but may be replaced. Figure supported by hands on a 4 foot platform, in two parts and signed along one leg and also signed on one foot on the platform. Condition: first and foremost, please see photos as they are part of the description and much more accurately describe the item better than I can with words. Some paint missing on places. Some fingers are missing which causes the piece to be unbalanced, the only way it stays up is if it’s leaned on a flat surface like a wall. Cracking on a few places but it appears to be superficial and not structural. The clock or thermometer is missing, you might be able to find a replacement.
