COOL RUSTIC HOWLING COYOTE OAXACA WOOD CARVING BY THE HIGHLY TALENTED ARTIST JUVENTINO MELCHOR. GREAT TRADITIONAL ZAPOTEC SYMBOLISM IN THE BANDS OF PAINTED DETAIL! This howling coyote carving was created by Juventino Melchor of the well known Melchor Family of woodcarvers from San Martin Tilcajete in Oaxaca. Juventino carves whimsical figures out of the traditional Copal wood that is indigenous to the area, and is well known for his animal and musical animal figures. These figures are stand outs both for quality and for their affordability. I love this piece for how rustic the traditional Zapotec design pattern is, the striking combination of the earth tones, as well as the spectacular carving itself that is full of a wonderful sense of movement in the positioning of the head. So full of gorgeous detail! Juventino used to do these carvings for one of the most well known carvers out there, who would in turn sell this for three times the price. Amazing and appealing detail. Giovanni Melchor Ramos is the son of Jesus Melchor and Maura Ramos, and the grandson of one of the original Master Carvers Coindo Melchor. Giovanni is a young third generation carver who has already won several awards and recognitions for his work. Giovanni learned the art form from his talented parents, and then went on to also carve and paint for the workshop of Master Carver Jacobo Angeles. With his exposure to different styles of painting, Giovanni began developing his own style of painting. He has taken home the Honorable Mention Award at the Friends of Oaxacan Folk Art’s juried award show in 2013 and 2016. We love seeing how Giovanni is faithfully carrying on the traditions of his family, and keeping the art form alive for future generations. I love he carved in deep set eyes of this fantastic howling coyote! The shading of colors is beautifully done, and then accented by bright pops of metallic gold.
