Faithful replica of circa 1880 rattle. Length 13″ Width from cheek to cheek 6″ Depth from tip of nose to back of head 4. Corn kernels are what shakes to make the rattle sound. Only shamans used these types of rattles. The Kwakiutl tribal shamans used this style of rattle particularly during the Winter Ceremonial, Tseyka. Bear is considered a medicine being with impressive magical powers, and plays a major role in many religious ceremonies. Bears are symbols of strength and wisdom to many Native Americans, and are often associated with healing and medicine since bears continue fighting after being seriously injured, Native Americans often believed they were capable of healing their wounds. Presenting a stunning hand carved Canadian Indian wooden wall carving expertly hand crafted and signed by the Kwakiutl Northwest Coast First Nations artist, Herman Bee. This exceptionally fine relief carving depicts a Killer Whale totem rendered in a traditional manner. This piece has been finely hand carved and beautifully finished with superb detail and a lovely depth of carving. This exquisite piece has been exceptionally hand carved from one solid piece of beautifully grained timber which has developed a lovely mellow patina that only time can bring. This flat-backed piece is designed to be displayed as a wall hanging with a small strap of leather attached to the reverse side. SIZE: This impressive piece measures approx 5 x 5.5 inches or 130 x 140mms. CONDITION: This fine example is presented in excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks, breaks or repairs. The timber has developed an appealing patina. This piece has been very well care for and presents spectacularly. MARKS: This piece is nicely signed to the reverse “Herman Bee Killer Whale Kwakiutl”.
