This is a classic vintage Balinese solid wood carving of the monkey god Hanuman he stands poised to carry the family Keris, and give it a place of honour. This carving is an excellent example of mid century Balinese carving and painting. His features are classic and he has no damage to his teeth, all his features are in excellent condition. Temple carving at its best. The gold burnishes up to a nice polish, the paint has a nice patina. He is in superb condition all intact no loss to the sculpture at all. It has been carved out of a solid piece of hardwood (weighs about 3 1/2 pounds) which shows a check in the base, very difficult to notice as it is towards the back. Please see all the photos for the composition and condition of this Balinese artifact. This is from our Balinese collection of wood carvings that we have acquired over the years. This carving with the painting and detail probably dates to the early 60s. If you have a special request we will do our best to adjust the schedule to accommodate your schedule. Balinese Hinduism is deeply interwoven with art and ritual and is concerned with a myriad of local and ancestral spirits. Balinese Hinduism is a heterogeneous amalgam in which gods and demigods are worshipped together with Buddhist heroes, the spirits of ancestors, indigenous agricultural deities and also with places considered sacred. Religion as it is practiced in Bali is a composite belief system that embraces not only theology, philosophy, and mythology, but ancestor worship, animism and magic. It pervades nearly every aspect of traditional life. Quote from Invincible Krises 2 page 126: Hanuman (Anoman) is the monkey chief, mythical leader of a large troop of ape-like creatures, ally of Rama in his war against Ravana the demon -king of Lanka (Ramayana). Through the stories of Ramayana, he has an important place and is a very popular and loved character. He is symbol of valor and loyalty. Today in Bali Hanuman is a particularly sacred character and he is very present in the Balinese society. The above information is based on the books: The Invincible Krises 2, Ensiklopedi Keris and Keris Jawa.
