African Grebo Mask, African Wood Carving, Tribal Art This powerful Grebo Mask with dense wood and black pigment belongs to the Kru group, a small population of the western coast of the Ivory Coast, and their neighbors from eastern Liberia. The Grebo ethnic group in Ivory Coast uses this mask to the needs of “fetish” (sacrifices). Worn vertically, Kru masks were fitted below a huge headdress which consisted of an arc-shaped structure made of vegetable fibers, covered with cloth and trimmed by a stiff fringe of palm-leafed fibers and long waving feathers, creating awe-inspiring effects.
