To create this lifesize Great Horned Owl, I glued 4 pieces of wood together and then carved it as one piece. It is my favorite owl I have created yet. Clint Wickman Original Wall Art. This is an original relief wood carving that I designed and carved in my studio. I carved everything by hand with power tools from kiln dried Pine wood. On this carving, most of the coloring and shading on the Great Horned Owl and tree is burned on by hand. I then followed the burning by hand painting on my own custom mixed stains to highlight and accent the piece. The back of the carving is flat for wall mounting, and I attached a heavy duty metal flush mount hanger for a nail or screw head. I also hand signed and dated on the back. After burning all of the details, the wood is sealed with shellac. I then hand paint stains, and finish with a brushed on top coat of exterior grade U. Resistant Spar Urethane with a “satin” sheen. This wood carving is however intended for indoor use. If you want to place it outdoors, I recommend brushing on a few more coats of Spar Urethane/Varnish.

This owl was carved with a chainsaw and powertools from a scotch pine log. It has been treated with an oil based spar urethane. It can be kept indoors or outdoors, but if kept outdoors, it is best to keep it in a cool shaded location, like under a covered porch. Do not put it out in the elements or in direct sunlight. The dimensions are roughly: 19″ tall and 10″ by 10 wide/thick. As can be seen in the photos, the carving does have some cracks in it. Cracking is a common and natural occurrence in wood. A bit more cracking may occur as the carving ages.
