Extra heavy and extra deep, this pair of 19th century Swiss Black Forest game plaques are 4″ in bas relief depth with a carved oval self-frame that is also deep at over 2″. The hare and grouse are just about life size within the 25″ x 16″ oval and each survives without much, if any, loss. Hung with a bow on a carved nail and against carved oak leaves, they make the prayerful statement of gratitude which underlies this art form and genre. They’re not hunter plaques, really – initially they were carved in the “Nature Morte”, or still life manner popular for kitchen decor, which primarily tells the story of thankfulness for the bounty of the day’s harvest and food for the family table. This set is unusual in depth, and also seemingly in a deep frame which is part of the carving, trim of evenly placed half-round gadroon trim. Fabulous for Country French, or cabin, lodge or just a kitchen or dining area with an eye for antiques. Very good to excellent condition for age and type, I can see a few chips of little consequence to the forms of the animal and bird. These are very heavy – a good deal more than the typical Black Forest plaques from same era. A heavier old forest growth wood likely accounts for the weight, but also the sizable carved outer’frame’. The pair were found in France and while they’d been hung with a wall nail (note recess up top on back), for a sturdy display you will want to decide on hardware or secure hanging wire for each. The plaque with grouse has a couple of shrinkage cracks in the wood, top, and one can see where the boards were bonded there toward the bottom, as well. It looks like a chip of tie ribbon there on the leg from which it hangs. Likewise, you can see a little separation in the original joint of the boards of the hare, top and bottom, but both plaques are very sturdy and solid, and that does not represent breaks so much as age. Superb Pair (2) 19th C. Swiss Black Forest Carved Plaques, Game Birds Nature Morte, Still Life. All items and photos are the express property of Antiques & Uncommon Treasure. A magnificent pair of game carvings, each one with a near-pristine carved pair of birds, one a fan tail pheasant with small bird at its side, the other a pheasant with long slender tail feathers, and at its side another smaller and elegantly carved bird. Each plaque is 21″ tall (pheasants in this pair hang heads at top) and 13 1/2″ at widest point, so a nice-sized pair. Found in France, they each have the paper label still on back which tells some of their history. This exceptional Animalier sculpture, carved by Swiss Black Forest Masters, were initially offered through a Paris retailer of fame, Ed. Schirrmann (a Swiss man) 7, rue Royale, PARIS, who concentrated on Black Forest and clocks. The set are signed “N” and dated 1877 (I think I’m reading it right – see photos). Each plaque is a very deep bas relief carving, 4 1/2 extension from wall, when hung. Very good to excellent condition throughout, I can find a couple of small nice to leaf tip, and no loss to the 4 birds with their exquisitely carved feathers, thin beaks, slender legs. The larger pheasants on this pair hang on wall with heads up, and the small birds and powder horns, etc. Hung as if by the hunter, are hanging upside down. The angle of the wings in repose is exceptionally fine, and they remain unbroken. I can see evidence of a small repair to one hanging post from which the pheasant hangs up top, nicely done. Surprisingly, beaks remain, as well. No breaks to the outer plaque and no cracks on either, nor to the wood of the figures – top quality pair! We’re easy to deal with. You are very important! These are made out of solid oak and they are extremely old. Our guess is that they were created in the late 18th century. Truly museum quality with extremely deep and detailed carving. Their origin is from a museum in Greece but they must have been created either in England or most probably in Germany from the Black Forest region. The majestic dimensions of the pheasant plaque are 115 centimeters long 55 centimeters wide and 15 centimeters thick!!! As far as I can tell it has no cracks, no recent restorations (the last 20 years) and no missing parts either. This unique piece is in perfect condition for its age with normal signs of age and use, original finish, some age separations on the flat back, a validation of age and originality! I always provide multiple photos that should be considered as an integral part of the description. NOT for like-new condition!!!
