A vintage hand carved wooden St. Francis of Assisi sculpture by artist Ben Ortega. The piece stands 10″ tall and is 3″ in diameter at the base. It is 7 3/4 wide from each outstretched hand. Fantastic carved detail on the face. This charming piece does show some minor wear (please see his right hand). Signed “Ben Ortega, #5″ on bottom. A little about the artist. I tell everybody that Saint Francis didn’t want me to go to California. His carvings are in collections world-wide, yet Ben never planned to be an artist. I used to sit in the kitchen and make little faces. I made two Indians-small pieces-and then I carved a little Saint Francis. Myrtle Stedman [the artist and builder] saw my carvings. She loved them so much I gave her the Indians. I used to work for her, picking apples and peaches when I was a little boy. Born in Tesuque, New Mexico, in 1923 to Isador and Agnes Ortega, Ben and his two brothers and sister were raised by an aunt and uncle. “My mother died in an automobile accident when I was two, ” he said. My father died when I was six. Richard was a U. Army veteran of World War II serving in the Normandy Invasion on Omaha Beach. He was awarded two Bronze Battle Stars and a Bronze Arrowhead. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Athens Fish and Game Club, and the Retired Teachers Association. He was an avid golfer and fisherman and also enjoyed wooden bird carving.

We are delighted to offer this tabletop sculpture showcasing a pair of Avocet birds on a burl wood base, circa 1970; by California folk artist Jack Francis. It features remarkable hand carving and painting, and beautifully exhibits the essence of the long legs and tremendous beaks that distinguish the Avocet. This rare piece would fit nicely in a stylish beach house, or on display as a reminder of summer days in any house. It is in very good overall condition, save for a repair to the beak of the larger bird and a nick to the smaller one. The sculpture measures approximately 13.5″ high x 13.5″ diameter x 9.25 depth. It is signed on the base. Jack Francis, bird carver from Mt. Shasta, California; was active in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Stunning Large Original Leonardo Salazar Wood Carving “St Francis” Signed Rare!! The artist Leonardo Salazar is the son of Leo Salazar. His carvings are made from the cedar wood selected from the forests of New Mexico. Per my research, he visualizes the carving from each piece of wood he selects. This carving is of St Francis. He is standing in front of a tree stump with birds perched on the stump in front of him. He holds a cross tightly to his chest. The carving stands approximately 14″ tall x 11″ long x 6 deep. It is clearly hand carved on the base of the carving with Leonardo Salazar’s name and the year. The condition is amazing. Hopefully my pictures show you all the detail and toning in the wood. A very vintage and collectible item. This will make a terrific gift your special someone or for yourself.
