Offered here is a rare matched pair of hand-carved and polychrome painted wooden figures by listed American folk artist Adrian R. Both figures are signed “ARW” on the underside of the feet and date to approximately the 1920s-1930s, placing them among his earlier known works. The pair depicts a man and a woman rendered in Woodall’s distinctive faceted carving style. Both figures stand approximately 6.5 inches tall and display exceptional detail including individually carved fingers and expressive, dignified faces. The pair displays particularly well together, with a clear visual relationship and balance. Original dry polychrome paint surface throughout. Condition is excellent for age with normal antique wear consistent with approximately 100 years of careful storage. These figures have been in the same Kentucky family for decades, inherited from a great aunt who knew Woodall personally. He worked on her family’s farm as a young man, and the figures were acquired directly from the artist during his lifetime. This direct, personal provenance connecting the figures to the artist is exceptionally rare. Adrian Woodall was a self-taught sculptor born in Christian County, Missouri. Originally an optometrist, he began carving professionally in 1927 and eventually relocated to Florida, where carving became his livelihood and he taught wood sculpture at Florida Southern College. This listing is for a vintage pair of hand-carved wooden pig sculptures made from Wenge wood. The pigs are reddish-brown in color and were likely made between 1960 to 1970. The pigs make a nice addition to any collection of animal sculptures and can pretty much be used for all occasions. They are gently used. The taller one measures about 9.25″ x 4.25″, the smaller one measures about 8″ x 4″. Together they weigh about 7.5 pounds. View photos for any and all condition issues.

This unique wood carving features a female figure with many children around her, including cherub and cupid-like figures. Measuring 18 inches in height and about 13.5 inches wide. One-of-a-kind high relief wood carving / sculpture is handcrafted. The wall hanging piece is made of wood stained fairly dark and features intricate details, especially on the body and faces of the figures, making it a perfect addition to any art collection. Although the sculpture does not come with a certificate of authenticity, I believe this to be a genuine handmade piece. Add this stunning piece to your collection today! This piece is not obviously signed, as is, but there could possibly be a signature behind the main carving, which is not accessible due to it’s being screwed to at “backer” board. There is some fabric between the two pieces of wood, which may have, at some point, been wrapped around the outer board, as there also seems to be some adhesive residue on the back of it. Skip Johnson Mountain Man & Woman Turned Wood Figures c. Very cool pair of mahogany turned wood figurines by renowned master woodworker C. A similar Mountain Man and Mountain Woman pair of figures are pictured in the book Wood Turning in America Since 1930 on page 50. Both his hard-to-find original rifle and her walking cane are included. The man measures about 10.75″ H and the woman measures about 9″ H. They are in excellent vintage condition (see photos) with just a touch of normal surface wear. Skip Johnson was one of the first three graduates of the Wood Program at Rochester Institute of Technology, and continued his education at many places, including the University of Wisconsin Madison, where he was a professor of woodworking from 1967 until his retirement.
