CONDITION: The bust of the carving appears to be splint through about halfway towards the mount, possibly intentionally, and then re-attached to the artwork with adhesive residue; cracks present to the carving, mostly along the grain of the wood; accretions, scuffs, minor abrasions, scratches, and discoloration to the wood of the carving; large vertical split present down the center of the wood mount, which has been repaired to the verso with a screwed metal bar and significant green adhesive residue; visible holes drilled through the mount at the upper center and lower right regions; minor chips, cracks, scratches, scuffs, discoloration, and accretions to the wood of the mount. That is a wood that is used in tobacco humidors (I know that because I build them). Spanish Cedar is impervious to moisture and regulates moisture in humidors, FYI. It also carves really well because of the long straight grain of the wood. This piece depicts an early American woman. The carving is wonderfully done, and is in perfect condition, without chips or cracks anywhere. The photos may look a bit odd from the steep angle of the camera. I took them like that so that you could see how deep the carving is. It is in very high definition as “Graphic Relief” carvings go. The depiction is definitely of a woman in motion and on the move. Take note of the pleats in her dress, and the folds in her blouse. It is very well crafted. The piece measures approx 18″ tall, and 7″ wide. The board is about an inch thick. Minnie Adkins Kentucky Folk Art Pig Very Early Works Not Signed. Minnie Adkins is a Kentucky folk artist known for her painted wood carvings of animals? Roosters, red foxes, bears, possums, and horses. She was born, 1934, in Isonville, a small town in rural Eastern Kentucky. While a young child, she was attracted to whittling wooden sticks. Her father gave her a pocketknife and she soon took up a hobby practiced mostly by boys and men. In 1968, Adkins, her husband Garland, and their son moved, like many families in Appalachia, to Ohio in search of jobs. In 1985, several of her works were included in the collection of the Kentucky Folk Art Center, [1] and is now in many permanent private and public collections. [2] Atkins is featured in a short documentary film[3] and many publications[4] [5]. [6] In the late 1980s, Minnie and Garland founded A Day in the Country, [7] a folk art fair that today features works by over 50 folk artists from Kentucky and nine other states. Rare Early 1900 Antique Korean Hand Carved HaiTai Tiger Herbal Medicine Grinder. This medicine grinder is very heavy at just under 16LBS and looks to be used. Kept in storage for over 50 years. Age: 1st quarter of 1900. Provenance: Private collection from South Korea, brought with us in 1980. This item was stored in a storage since early 1980 so they are not always in clean. It’s been collecting dust but I did clean up as much as possible without damaging the item. Item is in good condition overall with wear, possible old repair, cracks, splitting, loss of lacquer, tear, discoloration, smudges and loss of wood. Please see photos as part of description. Dimensions: 18.6″L x 5.1″D x 6H grinder only excluding roller. Weights approximately: 15.10LBS.
