ARNOLD AUSTAD 20TH CENTURY SCULPTURE, TWO NEPHRITE STONE CARVINGS, MOUNTED ON A WOOD BASE. I believe these are whales carved from nephrite. Nice condition, few light scuffs on top of wood base, see pics. Whales measure: at their longest and widest points approximately 6×3 and 5×2 inches and both whales are approximately 1″ thick at whale head and taper down to 1/32″. Wood Base measures approximately 7x4x3.5 inches. Sculpture Stands approximately 8 inches tall. Sculpture weighs approximately 2 pounds 3 ounces. Fabulous antique Spanish hand carved solid wood figural panel or plaque, likely a detailed rendition or version of “The Death of Socrates”! One of two marvelous hand carved figural panels that we’re adding this week, this one quite amazing in its detail and state of preservation! The paper label on the back missing some patches but reads “Exposition Nacional de Bellas Artes (Barcelona)” and has the carver’s? Name hand written below, possibly “Maneul Tabella”. The National Exhibition of Fine Arts (Spanish: Exposiciones Nacionales de Bellas Artes) was a regular event that took place in Spain from 1856 to 1968; usually in Madrid. These exhibitions were in the form of a competition, established by a Royal Decree from Queen Isabella II in 1853. It was the largest official exhibition of Spanish art. This one signed in the lower right corner and appears to read M. Very good to excellent condition. I really see no flaws to note here, just a stunning piece! Possibly a tiny nip or two to the carving but, as stated, nothing stands out. I’ve included several enlarged and detailed photos so look and enjoy. The plaque is 8.5″ x 5 1/8″ and roughly 1/2 thick. Antique Dated 1750 Treen Stay / Corset Busk. Sailor Carved Folk Art Wooden Love Token. Here is a stunning sailor carved scrimshaw style primitive. Antique treen stay busks – a flat piece of wood which was inserted into long pockets at the front of the stay/corset. Lovingly elaborated during the long hours in the sea, it was a traditional memento or promise for the girl left at home. It is carved from hard exotic wood in the traditional tapering curved form, nicely decorated with loving birds on top, a heart, vase with flowers and meandering vine, everything a very symbolical promise for eternal love. It is inscribed A. 1750, we are not sure whether the A. Is for Anno Domini or maybe initials. Authentic 18th century maritime antique from New England, coastal Massachusetts / Road Island. I will be listing more in the near future. The gentleman that carved this piece did outstanding work. It’s a thing of beauty! It does have a couple cracks in wood, not on front, see pictures.
