Wonderful 19th Century Countertop Cigar Store Figure of Punch. This wonderful Folk Art carving was in a general store in Indiana where. It was used as a Countertop advertising Figure until some time in the 20th. Century when the general Store was closed down as the country grew. And the small rural towns was passed by as the freeways expanded. It is carved out of one solid piece of wood and was most probably. It is now bare wood with some chips and very minor. The Punch and Judy show has roots in the 16th-century Italian commedia dell’arte. The figure of Punch is derived from the Neapolitan stock character of Pulcinella, which was anglicized to Punchinello. He is a manifestation of the Lord of Misrule and Trickster figures of deep-rooted mythologies. Beat up and as is. Right out of an estate! 13 inches wide by 14 inches deep. Other areas may vary. Rare 1800s Carved Black Forest Sculpture, Cock Fight with Basket, Cigar or Cache. Super Mid-1800s Carved Wood Black Forest Sculpture, Cock Fight with Basket, Cigar or Cache Pot. While I’m quite certain this was originally made to be used as a cigar server for table, with that beautifully carved basket the perfect size to hold a handful of largish after-dinner cigars, it would be equally fabulous to use as table centerpiece with a floral or dried flowers bouquet mounted into that basket. The carving is exquisitely done. I don’t see a signature, but this is of the quality you’d anticipate from a famed carver who would take price in signing his work. The piece is also quite large. Not the smallish rooster & bucket type we see regularly, carved and popular much later in the century, but a mid-1800s work of Animalier artistry one seldom finds. The base is 11 x 7.5. Very good condition for age and type, and were it not for the broken wing, this one would be excellent. Alas, it’s got the loss and is certainly a carving worthy of having restoration done if you’re a serious collector, or it’s wonderful as you see it, too, for use as a table centerpiece, just arrange your flowers and vines to take attention away from the carving’s one flaw. Big and impressive, heavy solid old forest natural growth wood in this one, too. Entirely carved from one big chunk of wood, the detail on the primary rooster is truly incredible. And the basket is detailed like no other. Our photos do not show this one nearly as well as it shows in person. A very dark stain, it’s hard to show the detail as your eye will take it in. Vintage Frank Gallagher Cigar Store Indian. Stands 5 feet tall. Weighs appx 60 lbs. Confirmed authentic Frank Gallagher Indian. Will include letter in sale. Carved in the 1980s. Frank didnt start signing his Indians until the 90s. Thats why this one is unsigned. Has a crack in the drum base which is normal for wood carvings and does not take away from the value. French Antique Black Forest Hand Carved Wood Sculpture Cigar Server with Basket. A fabulous French antique Black Forest sculpture dating to the late 19th century. It features a charming country scene, with two mouses near haystacks and two baskets. Rare and quite unique decor! The first basket is quite large and the other one is quite small. I guess that it was made to be used as cigar server. But it also be fabulous as a table centerpiece or pen holders on a desk.
