Carved and painted wood sculpture with inset decorative thermostat or clock that is missing but may be replaced. Figure supported by hands on a 4 foot platform, in two parts and signed along one leg and also signed on one foot on the platform. Condition: first and foremost, please see photos as they are part of the description and much more accurately describe the item better than I can with words. Some paint missing on places. Some fingers are missing which causes the piece to be unbalanced, the only way it stays up is if it’s leaned on a flat surface like a wall. Cracking on a few places but it appears to be superficial and not structural. The clock or thermometer is missing, you might be able to find a replacement.

This mid to late 18th century fellow is most likely German or Austrian and is richly carved from linden with oustanding facial features and moppy hair. Measuring 8 5/8″ tall x 8 1/2″ wide x 3 1/2 deep, the face suggests a child’s portrait and the pigmentation appears to be of the period for the most part. The symmetrically arrayed wings boast much original gold leaf (on red bole/gesso ground) with areas of wear and dull gold indicating later bronze powder over gilding/touch-up. The wood is in very good condition (minimal or no worming) and there is some paint/gesso loss in his hair on top. He has been displayed for years and is dusty.

This unique wood carving features a female figure with many children around her, including cherub and cupid-like figures. Measuring 18 inches in height and about 13.5 inches wide. One-of-a-kind high relief wood carving / sculpture is handcrafted. The wall hanging piece is made of wood stained fairly dark and features intricate details, especially on the body and faces of the figures, making it a perfect addition to any art collection. Although the sculpture does not come with a certificate of authenticity, I believe this to be a genuine handmade piece. Add this stunning piece to your collection today! This piece is not obviously signed, as is, but there could possibly be a signature behind the main carving, which is not accessible due to it’s being screwed to at “backer” board. There is some fabric between the two pieces of wood, which may have, at some point, been wrapped around the outer board, as there also seems to be some adhesive residue on the back of it. This beautiful, carved wood, Mexican folk art piece is a hanging, naked, winged angel. A classic, colonial-style piece for your art collection. It has lovely detail in the eyes, plump carved body and painted wings. It measures 10 1/2″ tall by 9″ wide and 13 1/2 long. These pieces have an antiquing glaze that gives them vintage charm. Way down in the southern mountains of Guerrero, Mexico, up high mountain roads, are the indigenous group (Nahua) that produce these beautiful carved wood art figures and wall masks. They are generally carved by men using the Tzampamitla tree and then whimsically detailed by the women in rich jewel tones (using translucent aniline dyes or paints) with eyes that seem to come alive. These remote villages and pueblitos include Maravatio, Tlamacazapa, Ahueuepan, San Francisco Ozomatlan, and San Critobal. Hard to obtain and highly collectible. This middle 1700’s northern Italian hand carved wooden boy putto is the picture of robust, plump good health with dimples, a shock of golden blonde hair and rosey cheeks. Measuring 12 1/2″ tall x 6″ wide on his 1 3/4″ tall x 4 1/4″ fauz marble painted base, the artist has chosen a dynamic contraposto pose with one foot elevated and resting on a human skull. The tradition of putti/young children being juxtaposed with human skulls as a reminder of the sin of vanity or the inevitability of death is a rich one reaching its peak in paintings and sculpture in northern Italy and the low countries in the middle 1600’s-middle 1700’s. This little fellow with wonderfully preserved original polychrome (stable) dates from the latter peiod and is filled with life despite his choice of foot rest. The elbow joint of his proper right arm is loose with old glue residue and will need a drop of glue when you receive him… Although the arm stays in place just as is. You will note several missing fingers or parts of fingers and notable, but not objectionable wear from age. The base may not be original… But is at least 150 years old judging by the quality of finish and the natural shrinkage in the wood.
