A great, very large and humorous folk art wood carving called “Chain Gang” depicting a prison work gang with guard engaged in the “Correctional Institute Physical Program” done in 1991 by recognized expert carver Elmer Jumpers from Philadelphia, PA. This piece was based on and done by Elmer as a “Tribute to Andy Anderson, ” famous and influential western artist and carver. It is a large carving, measuring 48″ long by 5″ wide with figures 10 1/2 high on base and in perfect condition. All is hand-carved and painted in the best American folk art manner and is titled and initiated on the base. What I’ve always found particularly fun about this wonderful piece is the expressions of the characters – the only frowning figure is the guard, the rest seem perfectly happy! Jumpers was such a master of characterization! This carving is part of our massive lifelong collection of works by the finest caricature/folk art carvers in America. It is just one of many carvings that will be offered in the near future as we need to downsize at retirement and smaller quarters. Given the weight (16 lbs) and size (48″x16″) of this piece , we can only offer free local. Just a word about possible pick-up during during current Covid situation- These large items are kept in my basement and would be easily accessible through the garage with large turn around driveway. Could even be brought outside on a table for a no contact pick-up. I have seen a lot of carved wooden chains over the years, but this one is a MONSTER… Absolutely the longest I have ever seen. NOT A REPRODUCTION this is an early piece of hand-carved Southern folk art. This is one of several sections from an estate in West Tennessee, found stored in an old barn loft. Circa late 1800’s. There are 49 individual links, including the large 4 1/2 ring at one end. Appears to be Southern Pine, as best I can tell. There is a quarter, shown in some pics, for size reference. Entire piece measures 159″ long a whopping 13′ 3″ long. Each individual link measures 4.75 long. Wood is quite dry, from being stored for so many years.
