Beguiling antique pair of Burmese (Myanmar) Nat spirit guardian/dancer figures from the Mandalay period (late 19th/early 20th century). Hand-carved from dark patinated teak hardwood, depicting a male and female in dynamic ritual poses with raised arms, flowing robes, and intricate feather-like detailing. 11 tall each on simple integral bases-perfect symmetry for collectors of Southeast Asian folk art. These guardian spirits (Nats) were common in temples or households for protection and performance rituals. This pair of beautifully carved wooden (probably teak) temple pieces depict the Burmese mythological chimera Pyinsa Rupa lit. It is a creature made from the amalgamation of parts of five different animals. It can be made up of an elephant, bullock (ox), horse, carp and tonaya (a mythical horned animal/dragon) or alternately lion, elephant, buffalo, carp, and hamsa(Sanskrit- hamsa or hamsa = an aquatic bird of passage, such as a goose or swan). The Pyinsa Rupa serves as the logo for Myanmar Airways International. 21 inches high and 7 inches wide at widest part (measured without stands).
