This little black bear was carved with a chainsaw from a white pine log. It has been sealed with spar urethane, giving it a glossy protective finish. The carving can be kept indoors or outdoors. If kept outdoors, I highly recommend keeping it in a cool shaded location, like under a covered porch roof. Do not place it out in your yard in direct sunlight. The excessive heat and harsh uv lights are very hard on wood carvings. As the carving ages, some cracking may occur. Cracking is a natural and common occurrence in wood. Please understand this before purchasing! The dimensions are roughly: 29.5″ tall, 12″ wide, and 8 thick. To keep the carving looking its best you will need to take care of it. I recommend applying a fresh coat of spar urethane annually.

This bear was carved from a white pine log using a chainsaw and powertools. The dimensions are roughly: 29″ tall, 11″ wide, 8 thick. The sign is 16.5″ wide x 5.5″ tall. The sign is removable, as can be seen in the photos. The carving has been sealed with a flat oil based spar urethane. It can be kept indoors or outdoors, but if kept outdoors, I highly recommend keeping it in a cool shaded location, like under a covered porch. Do not place the carving in direct sunlight as the excessive heat and harsh uv lights are very hard on wood carvings. Wood has a tendency to crack as it ages. Cracking is a natural and common occurrence in wood. With this being said, the carving may develop cracks as it ages.

This listing is for the two hand carved wood bears that you see in the photos. They are not identical but I believe that they make a good pair. I do not know when they were carved. I do not know what kind of wood they are made of. I think maybe black walnut. Each bear measures close to 6 inches long and is about 3 ½ inches tall. Measured to the edge of the paws, each bear measures close to 3 inches wide. One bear weighs close to 11.8 while the other weighs close to 12.2 ounces. Both bears have glass eyes and teeth made from a substance that I have not identified. Curiously, the set of teeth on one bear are more defined or carved than on the other bear. The condition is much like you see it in the photos. They are generally in excellent condition. They might benefit from a careful cleaning. I brushed a lot of dust off of them but I missed some spots before taking the photos so some you might notice some small lighter areas where the surface is lower. Also, there is some light soil in the lower areas. There are no cracks or chips. I have not noticed any scratches. On one bear, some of the back bottom teeth are missing. I think that might be how it was made. Otherwise, these bears are fine and a shown. All four eyes are present. My photos should give you a good idea of their general condition. I guarantee these bears to be as described and represented by the 19 photos after the general description. The photos are part of the description. Please look at all of them. Please know that the lighting in my photos is uneven and that there might be shadows or reflections. The colors on my monitor look close to but not exactly like the actual colors. Different monitors may show different colors. I often say that an item measures or weighs “close to” because in my opinion no measurements are exact and some things are difficult to measure. Often, I have a double wall box custom made for larger items and that might result in a short delay. When I use packing peanuts, they are usually biodegradable. This bear stands 23 inches tall including the base and is roughly 10 inches wide. It has been sealed with spar urethane and can be kept outdoors. The carving does have cracks and natural imperfections in it. The cut you see in the back of the carving is a relief cut and its purpose is to help control cracking in the sculpture. Please keep in mind that this is a Wood Carving carved from a raw timber round log and it will develop more cracks and checking as it ages. There is no way to stop cracking from occurring. It is the natural process of wood and cannot be stopped. The best place to keep a carving is on a covered porch or other Shady cool location. I recommend keeping the carving out of direct sunlight and away from hot dry air like that from a furnace as these things will intensify cracking. This item is in the category “Art\Art Sculptures”.
